Nigeria Misses Out on 2026 World Cup After Penalty Shootout Loss to DR Congo
The Super Eagles will not feature at the 2026 World Cup after falling to DR Congo in a dramatic playoff final on Sunday night.
Nigeria and DR Congo played to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, but three missed penalties ultimately ended Nigeria’s campaign.
Frank Onyeka gave the Super Eagles an early lead in the third minute, only for M. Elia to equalize for DR Congo in the 32nd minute.
During extra time, both teams had opportunities to seal the win. Tolu Arokodare missed a key header for Nigeria, while goalkeeper Nwabali made a crucial save from a DR Congo free kick. However, neither side could break the deadlock, sending the game to a penalty shootout.
The shootout proved costly for Nigeria. Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon missed early penalties, while Nwabali managed to deny DR Congo’s first attempt. Despite the heroics, Nigeria ultimately fell short, ending their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
