Lagos Speaker Obasa hints at governorship ambition, says future lies with party

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has opened up about his political future, acknowledging that a governorship bid is not off the table after his tenure as Speaker.

Speaking in an interview with Television Continental (TVC) on Thursday, Obasa said while he holds personal ambitions, the direction of his political journey would ultimately be determined by his political party.

“Let me just explain. Now that we are talking about politics, you have to be a member of a political party and if you are a member of a political party, you have to believe in the leadership of the party,” Obasa stated.

This comes after Obasa recently survived a brief political upheaval that saw him momentarily removed from his position as Speaker — a development that has further fueled discussions about his next move in politics.

In a previous interview with the same TV station, Obasa had declared that his next goal was to become either a senator or a governor, having previously served as a councillor and now Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.

When reminded of that statement, which was made seven years ago, Obasa clarified that it wasn’t meant to be taken as a firm declaration. Still, he did not rule out the possibility of pursuing higher office.

“So you get to a stage where you cannot determine what is next for you. On your own, you may aspire that I want to become this, but if you have respect for the party and the way the party is being managed, you know that the party leaders will sit together and decide who will be next. It’s all about consultation, engagement with the party leaders,” he explained.

When asked directly if he was considering another four-year term in the Lagos Assembly, Obasa gave a telling response: “Not really.”

While careful not to make definitive pronouncements, Obasa’s remarks clearly suggest that his sights may be set on a higher role — possibly the governorship — though he insists such decisions must align with the will and structure of his party.
