Super Falcons defender Onome Ebi has officially announced her retirement from football, marking the end of a 20-year illustrious career at both club and national levels.
Ebi, who earned 109 caps—the most by any Nigerian female player—won four African Women’s Championship (WAFCON) titles and made history as the first African footballer, male or female, to play in six FIFA Women’s World Cups.
In her emotional statement, she reflected on her journey, describing it as one filled with “challenges, victories, and lessons,” and expressed her commitment to continue contributing to football through mentorship and advocacy.
The Super Falcons, led by captain Rasheedat Ajibade, released a heartfelt tribute celebrating Ebi’s leadership, resilience, and trailblazing impact on women’s football, calling her “a beacon of excellence” and “a hero whose legacy will never fade.”
Throughout her career, Ebi played across Sweden, Turkey, Belarus, and China, earning a reputation for her strength, consistency, and leadership—qualities that have made her a role model for future generations of African footballers.
