Overview

Oyinkansola Ayra Starr, whose real name is Sarah Aderibigbe, was born in Cotonou, Benin, on June 14, 2002. She is a 22-year-old Nigerian singer and songwriter who has quickly gained international recognition for her distinctive fusion of R&B and Afropop sounds.

Early Career and Education

Growing up in a musically interested household, Ayra Starr’s love of music was sparked early on. At the age of ten, she joined a secondary school chorus and collaborated with her brother on songwriting. She went on to study at Les Cours Sonou University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Relations. She experienced bullying in school because of her age and appearance, which is why she turned to music for strength and comfort. She began modeling at the age of sixteen with Quove Model Management, a Lagos-based agency that worked with companies like Mazelle Studio and Complete Fashion Magazine. She began posting song covers on Instagram in 2019, which caught the eye of Don Jazzy, an executive at Mavin Records, who signed her to the label.
