Oversabi Aunty is a Nollywood movie directed by and starring Toyin Abraham. Other acts in the movie include Enioluwa Adeoluwa, Mike Ezuruonye, Ngozi Ezeonu, Ozain Ibadan, Queen Nwokoye, Sanusi Izihaq, Tana Adelana, and Toyin Afolayan, among others.
Synopsis: Toun, a self-righteous church usher obsessed with “fixing” others, turns family life into a moral battlefield. Her holy overzealousness peaks at a disastrous wedding introduction, forcing her to confront the chaos she’s created. Before heading to the cinema to see this movie, we felt it would be in the calibre of Toyin Abraham’s other movies, e.g., Alakada. However, the movie offered more than comedy and drama; it also evoked strong emotions amid chaos. It is heavy in traditional display and rich in cultural promotion.
Oversabi Aunty – The fusion of cultures
Oversabi Aunty involves a wedding that united the Yoruba and Igbo people. Nollywood seems to be promoting Igbo and Yoruba unions, making it seem like it happens daily. The wedding guests’ costumes show that a great deal of money was spent to create that scene. The beautiful yellow wrapper, white buba, and red gele worn by the Igbo family were awesome to behold. At some point in the wedding, it was as if both cultures were clashing. That adds to the drama Oversabi Aunty promises. However, the Nigerian Censors Board needs to caution filmmakers about the cultural content they produce, especially given the high level of tribalism in Nigeria following the 2023 general elections. The Owanbe scene would have been impressive, but we’ve seen so much of this setting in Nollywood that it now seems as if any director can set it up without breaking a sweat.
The religious angle
This movie is packed with some life lessons and sermons that expose how hypocritical most humans are. Oversabi Aunty, portrayed by Toyin Abraham, is a holier-than-thou woman who monitors the lives of others, especially members of her local church. However, her own life is not properly tidied to position her as a judge of others. While she frowns at indecent dressing, her daughter dresses in such a manner to go to nightclubs and usually smuggles a boyfriend into her bedroom at night.
Toyin Abraham and Mike Ezuruonye came with an A-game
The acting by both of them was dramatic, well-orchestrated, and not forced. The performance really matched the character they portrayed. Casting Mike Ezuruonye as a comic character would have been discouraged, but the actor impressed. It was even funny when he spoke Yoruba using Igbotic accent. The same could be said about Toyin Abraham when speaking Igbo. Enioluwa Adeoluwa performed well in the serious role he played. His acting was serious, capable of erasing the playful notion people have of him.

Oversabi Aunty is the movie families can troop out to see this Christmas. It comes with laughter, emotions, drama, and a bit of action. I wonder why it’s not getting the hype it deserves. It gets a 7.5/10
